Government, Advice and Best Practice Sites

There is a great deal of experience within the UK in the construction and operation of buildings. The sites listed here have collated some of that experience and aim to disseminate the resulting information to others. Their aim is to improve the quality and performance of buildings by highlighting good practice and ways to avoid pitfalls.

Association for the Conservation of Energy
Aim is to encourage a positive national awareness of the need for and benefits of energy conservation, to help establish a sensible and consistent national policy and programme, and to increase investment in all appropriate energy saving measures.

British Standards Institute (BSI)
Website of the worlds leading independent standards and quality services organisation. Involved in setting the standards in the UK Europe and Worldwide that affect the construction industry.

Centre for Education in the Built Environment (CEBE)
One of the subject area sites making up the learning and teaching support network (LTSN). A site intended to support lecturers in built environment subjects. Contains much information of use to students.

Commission for Architecture and The Built Environment (CABE)
CABE is a non departmental public body sponsored by the department of culture, media and sport. Its aim is to promote high quality design and architecture and raise the standard of the built environment generally.

Constructing Excellence
Organisation which aims to bring together all involved in the construction and design processes to exchange good practice information. The intention is to achieve improvements across a range of factors. These include reducing costs, construction times, defects and accidents whilst increasing productivity, profits and predictability.

Sustainable Development
Website explaining thegovernments approach to sustainable development.

The Carbon Trust
This programme has produced a great deal of information on the subject of energy conservation in buildings. Much of this information is available free in the form of advice, videos and high quality booklets.(you will need to register to access downloadable information)
